Mesothelioma

The mesothelium is a protective membrane that surrounds and protects much of the body's internal organs. Malignant mesothelioma, often shortened to mesothelioma, is a cancerous tumor of the mesothelium. The most common form is pleural mesothelioma where the tumors form on the sac that protects the the lungs.

The risk of developing mesothiloma increases following prolonged exposure to asbestos. Roughly 75% of the nearly 2,000 new patients that are diagoned each year in the United States report a history of exposure to asbestos at work. On average, 35-40 years elaps between exposure to asbestos and development of mesothiloma.
